Focusing on Virality is Stupid

“You cannot make a viral video… all you can do is make a video.”

This is one of many nuggets of wisdom Dr. K dropped in an interview with Jay Clouse.

We have all fallen victim to setting unrealistic expectations with our content.

I’m definitely guilty of this.

Sometimes I’ll record a video and think “man, that little thing I did at the beginning there, that could really catch’em! This could rack up millions of views!”

In reality, the videos that usually perform best are the ones that light me up in some way during the creative process. The snappy editing and best video practices are important, but they come second to the story or vision I want to execute.

If there’s one thing I believe to my core about video, it’s that you have to believe in and be excited about your message in order to grow an audience that is excited to watch & share it.

Video marketing can certainly look like shooting 10 quick ads per month, putting some money behind them and calling it a day.

OR

it could mean that you play the long game. Share what delights you. Trust that you’ll attract your tribe.

There is no right answer, but virality is never guaranteed.

All you can do is make your next video.

Hope you’re excited about it 😎
