“One-Take Wonder” is BS

In Hollywood, there is no such thing as a true “one take wonder.”

There are table reads, rehearsals, and then take after take after take while filming.

The lines must be delivered perfectly, with emotion. The actors have to feel what they are saying.

Your own videos probably don’t require quite as much effort. While it’s important to truly feel and believe in your message, you likely don’t have to spend weeks and/or months preparing to deliver a 60-second YouTube Short.

HOWEVER: you may need to warm up a little. Shake off the rust.

One of the things I’ve learned after years of shooting my own content and directing clients on shoots is that the first couple videos can be…tough.

Fumbling over words, delivering sentences unnaturally, stiff body language, I’ve seen (and done) it all a thousand times.

This is why I suggest to shoot your intros & most important content last.

The intros to your videos are the most pivotal few seconds for your audience, they decide in a mere moment whether or not they are going to swipe away.

Your intros should be magnetic and engaging, so give yourself time to warm up.

Record a couple of short, lower-stakes videos, get in the groove.

If I have one single video to record, 9/10 times my third take is the best one.

The first take is usually just getting the words out, the second establishes pace & tone, and the third is where my personality takes hold.

Don’t be a hero. Let the “one-take wonder” be an idea of the past.
