How to Prepare for the TikTok Ban 🎥

How to Prepare for the TikTok Ban 🎥

TikTok has faced numerous challenges over the years, including concerns about user data privacy and its ties to the Chinese government. Former US President Donald Trump was a pretty vocal critic of TikTok and tried to ban it in the United States during his administration, but his efforts ultimately failed.

Now, Congress is making another attempt to ban TikTok nationwide through the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information Communications Technology Act (RESTRICT Act).

There are no sure things in life, but the probability of a TikTok ban just went up precipitously.

Here’s how to make the most of TikTok’s impending doom whether you were using the platform or not:

1. If you aren’t on TikTok, now is your best shot to break into shortform vertical video

Review your current social media strategy and evaluate the platforms you're using. If TikToks goes away, there is going to be a huge surge in demand for short form vertical video content across Linkedin, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts.

Where does your audience stand on each of those platforms? Does your current social strategy support publishing more to those regularly?

Get ahead of the curve and start publishing consistently now. If/when TikTok is banned, everyone will be flocking to the platforms you will already have a solid presence on.

    2. If you are on TikTok, Act NOW to convert your audience (and don't worry about being spammy)

Once you've identified the platforms you want to focus on, it's essential to act immediately to convert your TikTok audience.

While it might feel desperate or slimy to say directly “hey make sure you’re following me on X platform so you can keep up with my content,” worst case scenario you get an unfollow on the platform that is going away. Best case scenario, it converts.

Don’t wait to start promoting your other platforms

If the RESTRICT Act goes through, it’s going to be a rude awakening for many brands and influencers who haven’t made any effort to cross-pollinate their audience. Don’t let yourself be one of them.
