Statistically Significant Intros

What’s the most important part of your video?

Statistically Significant Intros

What’s the most important part of your video?

There’s a correct answer, and I can prove it with math.

Below is an example average view duration graph for a video on YouTube. In our private coaching group, we share real AVD graphs and break them down to improve our craft for making videos, but in this email, I want to make the math as easy as possible.

You can see that there are indicators for the percentage of viewers at the 30 second mark (auto-generated by YouTube) and at 94 seconds that I got by hovering my mouse over the graph.

This video’s cumulative average view duration, the average % across all views, is 39.6%.

Now, let’s imagine you publish a 10 minute video. 30% of people leave by the 30 second mark

Another 20% leave by the 3 minute mark. 25% leave over the remaining 7 minutes

Here’s what that average view duration graph would look like:

Let’s pretend that this video got 100,000 views for the sake of easier math.

That means that 30,000 people left before the 30-second mark of the video. By the 3rd minute, we lost another 20,000 people.

If the 30-second AVD went up 10%, it would jump from 70% up to 77%. I have 7,000 more people potentially watching an additional 9:30.

But if I increase AVD 10% at the 3 minute mark (50% up to 55%), I have an additional 5,000 people potentially watching 7:00 of video.

So, improving the introduction has the potential to add 66,500 additional minutes of watch time.

While, improving later in the video could only yield 35,000 more minutes of watch time.

Clearly, you should put the most effort into your introduction.

But, That’s Not All…

Your intro will also auto play when a YouTube user hovers over your thumbnail. The first 5 seconds are part of the reason that your video will be clicked on in the first place.

It needs to be designed to inspire intrigue. It needs to clearly communicate what is coming next. It needs to have pleasing audio and not be thrown together last minute.
