The End of Kayfabe in Wrestling
Kayfabe is the practice of portraying staged wrestling events as authentic.
It's an unspoken contract where wrestlers and fans pretend that the theatrical wrestling stories and characters are genuine, in order to dial up the entertainment experience.
While Kayfabe was strictly upheld for decades, it's not as rigorously enforced as it used to be.
Wrestlers are now more likely to break character or, like on a recent Pat McAfee show appearance, explain the meta of the story they are building.
What does this have to do with you?
All of the illusions have been melted away by the internet.
It was easy for wrestlers to keep up the facade for a 3-hour show and when cutting a few promos. It doesn’t hold up in the era of podcasts, youtube, and shortform video.
When the content marketing machine demands new digital breadcrumbs every few days, you can’t keep the charade up.
So… you don’t need to front in your videos.
If you work from a home office, go on walks in the middle of the day, or always have your dog close by, that is an advantage.
It lands as more authentic and, lucky for you, is a more sustainable way to tell your story.
Stop acting and just communicate. The audience is in on that game.
