Three Timeless Formats

You do not need to reinvent the wheel when making videos.

In fact, trying to be completely and totally original is a recipe for paralysis. You’d be better off starting, publishing something, collecting feedback, and trying again.

So, why not start with a proven video format? Here are three obvious ones.

  1. Tier Lists

The internet is full of ranking videos that place the subjects of analysis into different tiers.

Standard grading from A to F, with ‘S’ tier reserved for the best of the best.

You can use TierMaker to set it up and use the ranking process to add your commentary.

  1. Reactions

Play a viral or controversial video, then react to it.

Most likely, the clip will be more well known than you, so you can draft off its relatively larger popularity.

Once again, the key is to add insightful commentary around the thing you’re reacting to.

  1. Blind Comparison / Diagnosis

This will vary greatly by the niche or industry that you’re in. But the core idea is that you give an immediate reaction to something with incomplete information.

The viewers should have more information than you, but that’s what makes your reaction more honest and compelling.

If you can’t play with taste or sound, then try an immediate diagnosis of a problem when given a novel situation.

Example for a wealth advisor: “Steve makes $105k/year, has no debt other than a $250k mortgage. No Roth IRA. What should he do?”
