Trick Yourself into Video Flow (2 Ways)

How often do you reach flow state?

Being “in flow” sounds ethereal and hard to obtain.

It’s this abstract state of being that can only be achieved when a) you’re perfectly caffeinated or b) you allow yourself a huge chunk of time for deep work.

Both of those options are fine, but how can you reach flow state when you’re shooting video content?

To my knowledge, there are two shortcuts.

  1. Batch Shooting

Speaking to a camera can be an inherently uncomfortable thing, which is why batch shooting can be the perfect “deep work” scenario.

If you have 10-20 video topics prepped ahead of time, click record and let ‘er rip, chances are you’ll forget you’re performing. When you batch shoot your videos, you give yourself the gift of free-flowing gab. The whole point of prepping a bunch of topics is having a rough idea of what you’d like to say before-hand, so when the camera is on there are no barriers.

It could take 2-3 videos to warm up, but batch shooting is one of the quickest and easiest ways to achieve video flow.

  1. Post-Game Analysis

Picture this: you’re having an impassioned conversation with a friend about something you care about, something you’re good at, or something you believe in, when all of a sudden it dawns on you: this would make a great video.

Sure, it’s not always appropriate to whip out a camera mid-conversation, but make note of it! Mentally bookmark what you were talking about and immediately after the conversation or whenever it is appropriate, brain dump or word-vomit to your iPhone. If you feel strongly about an idea, you should act on that idea ASAP.

One of my favorite books I’ve read in the last few years is Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. In the book she talks about how ideas are living, breathing things that jump from person to person, or “host to host,” waiting for the right host to act on them.

If an idea sets you on fire, don’t let that fire go out. Document and share it.

And let me know how it goes.
