Video Editor History

For the first 2 years of my company, my cofounder Hannah Phillips, edited all of our videos.

Some of the videos did well. And we put out a ton of content.

But, we also missed some deadlines. And we never went back for a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th revision because there was always a backlog of videos to get to.

As a result, we didn’t really grow that quickly.

Our trajectory began to change when we hired our first full time editor.

AT was a recent grad, based in Pittsburgh, with lots of ambition and entry-level skills.

He jumped at each new project we gave him and his skills grew quickly.

But, we were a small company (we still are). And did not have the revenues to justify paying market rate (let alone above market) for a talented creative.

Within two years, he’d outgrown us and took a full time role in NYC.

We were proud to be a jumping off point for his career. But also scrambling to re-organize our creative team.

We looked overseas after meeting serial entrepreneur Marshall Haas.

We used Support Shepherd to hire our first two video editors.

Together, they cost less than our local full time employee.

But, they weren’t entry level. They were experienced professionals that had been editing videos for at least 5 years each.

The quality of our output jumped.

Today, we employ a half-dozen creatives full time.

Individual videos they produce have earned hundreds of thousands of organic views.

That has translated into more inbound leads, enormous industry authority, and growing topline revenue.

We have built an internal process for hiring video editors without the need for an external agency.

Our process can involve processing over 100 applications, conducting 20 initial screening interviews, administering 10 test projects, and conducting 5 final interviews, just to hire one video editor.

I’m largely removed from the process.

My senior editor conducts the test and the final interview. My operations manager handles the applications and initial screening.

I’m freed up to generate better ideas for videos, develop scripts, and take the other actions that grow my company.

If you’d like my playbook for hiring your own video editor, sign up for our FREE training on March 26th.

We will walk through it step-by-step.

Best,

P.S. - No editor that I’ve hired has ever chosen to leave (we’ve fired a few). So, I’ll also talk about retention a bit.
